Speak Esperanto, See the World
Though we ourselves do not speak Esperanto, the artificial language invented by L.L. Zamenhof at the end of the 19th century, we are fascinated by people who do. Especially the small number of people who raise their children speaking Esperanto as a first language. Athanasius Kircher, after all, was one of the fathers of the universal language movement.
Several years ago, our investigations put us in contact with a noted Esperantist living in the United States, who told us about his travels around the world using a program known as “Pasporta Servo,” a hospitality network linking 1350 hosts in 85 countries who have volunteered to put up Esperanto speakers for free — provided their guests converse only in Esperanto. Their motto: “Hitch a ride to the world. All you need is your thumb … and Esperanto.”
