Muggletonian Celestial Prints
The Muggletonians were a 17th-century religious sect founded by a tailor John Reeve and his cousin Lodowick Muggleton, who believed that they were the “two witnesses” prophecied to appear at the end of times in the Book of Revelations. The Muggletonians survived into the 20th century, with their last member, Mr. Phillip Noakes of Matfield, Kent dying in 1979. These 19th-century prints by Charles Baxter, based on planetary charts by Isaac Frost, were meant to contrast the untenable Newtonian vision of the universe with Muggletonian astronomical theory, which held that the earth was at the center of the universe. The prints are extremely rare for the time period because of their use of an innovative and expensive printing technique that allowed subtle gradiations of color.
Zoomable hi-res prints available at the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco.
