Searching for Buddha Boy
In this month’s GQ, George Saunders travels to southern Nepal in search of a 15-year-old boy who had sat under a tree for 10 months in silent meditation, apparently without food or water. Devotees claim that Ram Bomjon is a new Buddha and had flocked to see him and the strange lights that were said to emanate from his forehead. However, not long after Saunders’ visit, the boy disappeared with a promise to return in six years. A massive search operation was launched. More at the BBC, including video of the Buddha Boy.

For someone who hasn’t eaten or drank anything in 10 months, he sure isn’t looking too skinny or tired.

He was not a boy at all but a series of self-interchangeable clones, emerging out of the fungus-covered roots of the Nepalese tree, infinitely re-boiling himself outward from the original, now lost, version - itself a mirage created by local geo-tectonic energy… The “boy” now missing is, in fact, an arboreal decoy. Tree camouflage.

I know now what seemed strange:
1. This is the neck of a athlete/fighter/soldier
2. This isn’t the body of a 15-year old (see 1.)
3. This strongly suggests a wig (see video footage)
4. The ethnic markers are somehow wrong (have you seen the rest of ‘his’ family?)
