The Films of Jean Painleve
French filmmaker Jean Painleve is a hero of the Athanasius Kircher Society. His short, magical subaquatic documentaries on subjects including the love life of the octopus, seahorses, and “freshwater assassins” were the predecessors of all modern nature films, and to our mind have never been surpassed as a body of work.
The book Science is Fiction surveys his oeuvre. Two DVDs of his films can be purchased from the Archives Jean Painleve.
Two Painleve films have been made available online:
“Acera, or the Witches’ Dance” (1972)
“Le Vampire” (1945)
