New Age Kircherian Music

lightwave.jpgMundus Subterraneus is an album by a new age music group called Lightwave. Inspired by the writings of Father Kircher, the album features ambient tracks with titles like “Mapping the Earth,” “Cabinet de Curiosités 1,” and “Towards the Abyss.” According to All Music Guide:

The CD title comes from a “spectacular” book by Athanasius Kircher, a 17th century Jesuit priest. His books and theories were quite controversial. That led to his being deemed mentally unstable (with a little bit of truth). This music reflects the controversy and Kircher’s emotional instability. The atmospheres are dark and foreboding. The experimental sounds border on avant-garde.

Hey, I have this one. Didn’t even remember the Kircher connection. The album is quite dark ambient. Very spooky sounds that come from the corners of the room, especially spooky if one listens to it in the dark.
