Galton’s Anthropometric Instruments

How does a 19th century Englishman measure humans scientifically? With a special collection of anthropometric devices, collected by the University College London’s Francis Galton Collection. There are whistles to test hearing range, hand dynamometer for measuring grip strength, craniometers for measuring head span, as well as glass eyes and hair samples for precisely documenting shades of color.

Galton also helped develop the science of composite photography, which overlayed photo upon photo of people of a particular “type” (eg, the “criminal type”) in order to identify the type’s defining characteristics. How far composite photography has come.
