The Mathematical Wonder Cabinet

“Mathematical Wunderkammern” is the title of a paper by William Mueller about how 19th and early 20th century collections of geometrical and topological models fit into the tradition of the wonder cabinet.
The University of Arizona mathematics department has set up a web page with images of its many models and calculating machines. And the impressive Altgeld Model Collection at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is also online (though a free registration is required to view the images). We’ve uploaded a few below. And don’t miss this slideshow of Hiroshi Sugimoto’s photographs of mathematical models.
