Chromatographic Writing of the Edo
The Edo people of Benin employ a unique chromatographic writing system, which we imagine must be either a boon or an incredible nuisance to Edo synesthetes. Instead of using a large number of letters or symbols, as in most other written languages, the Edo alphabet has relatively few symbols which are shaded in any of seven different colors to provide a full range of meanings. Composing even the simplest document requires seven pens. Efficiency of writing is not the language’s greatest virtue.
* Another attempt at color writing: Solresol. And color music.
