770’s of the World

770 Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn, NY is the headquarters of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, one of the largest sects of Hasidic Judaism. The building, a former medical clinic, was purchased by the movement in 1940 as a home and synagogue for the Lubavitcher Rebbe Yosef Yitzchak Schneerson. It was later occupied by his son-in-law, the seventh and last Lubavitcher Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneerson, who some Lubavitchers believe to have been the Messiah. Today, “770″ has become something of a shrine to the Lubavitch movement, and a dozen replicas of the building have been constructed around the world in places as far-flung as Argentina and Australia. Husband and wife photographers Andrea Robbins and Max Becher spent ten years [correction: one year] photographing the 770’s of the world. The results of their work are chronicled here.
